The Great Riddle Thread

Postby Tiberius Dionysius Draco on Thu Jan 20, 2005 10:45 pm

Salvete Romani,

I just stumbled across a few riddles the other day, and was wondering if someone might know the answer to them (I know I do :P ). So if you're up for it, here they are:

1) You throw away the outside and cook the inside. Then you eat the outside and throw away the inside. What did you eat?

2) I run over fields and woods all day. Under the bed at night I sit not alone. My tongue hangs out, up and to the rear, awaiting to be filled in the morning. What am I?

3) I am weightless, but you can see me. Put me in a bucket, and I'll make it lighter. What am I?

4) Pronounced as one letter,
And written with three,
Two letters there are,
And two only in me.
I'm double, I'm single,
I'm black, blue, and gray,
I'm read from both ends,
And the same either way.
What am I?

5) From the beginning of eternity
To the end of time and space
To the beginning of every end
And the end of every place.
What am I?

If you can solve all these, I have some others up my sleeve, have fun solving them :)

Got it.

I'm thinkin' (2) is a pair of most any kind of footwear (shoes, boots, that sort of thing...though not caligae, slippers, or flip-flops).

(1) could almost be an egg, if you're one of those health nuts that tosses the yolk!

Keep on truckin',

Look E There!

Postby Aldus Marius on Fri Jan 21, 2005 9:14 am

Agreed, amice--No. 5 has just got to be the letter 'e'!

I like Lupus' suggestion about the hole, too. Reminds me of a saying (to be used on those whose heads have swollen):
"If you ever start to think you're indispensible, stick your arm in a bucket of water--pull it out--and see how big a hole you leave."

There, that covers the bucket and the hole. Off to break my brain s'more...

First, the easy ones:
2 is absolutely a shoe
4 is indeed an eye
5 = E

Then the one I liked the best: 3
Really tuff, but I think it's a hole, no?
edit: damn, I thought I was the first to know

I have no idea what the first one should be...

But I like this topic!

Salvete Romani,

So far we have:

You throw away the outside and cook the inside. Then you eat the outside and throw away the inside. What did you eat?

Unsolved!

I run over fields and woods all day. Under the bed at night I sit not alone. My tongue hangs out, up and to the rear, awaiting to be filled in the morning. What am I?

Solved by Marius, a pair of shoes was the answer.

I am weightless, but you can see me. Put me in a bucket, and I'll make it lighter. What am I?

Solved by Lupus, a hole put into a bucket makes it lighter.

Pronounced as one letter,
And written with three,
Two letters there are,
And two only in me.
I'm double, I'm single,
I'm black, blue, and gray,
I'm read from both ends,
And the same either way.
What am I?

Solved by Duellianus, eye was the answer

From the beginning of eternity
To the end of time and space
To the beginning of every end
And the end of every place.
What am I?

Solved by Duellianus as well, the letter E solved this riddle.

So that leaves riddle number 1 unsolved but I'll give a hint:
"Some people like to butter it before they eat it."

Oh, and seeing as one riddle might not be enough to keep you going, I'll add another riddle to my post, here it is:

A man came to a river side,
With a donkey bearing an obelisk.
But he did not venture to ford the tide,
For he had too good an *.

* fill in the missing word.

Have fun and valete bene,

Lol, nice try, but I don't know anyone who butters his chicken before eating it. Still, good try but still not the right answer I'm looking for.

K.C. Duellianus wrote:As for this:
A man came to a river side,
With a donkey bearing an obelisk.
But he did not venture to ford the tide,
For he had too good an *.

The practical side of me says * = bridge maybe I'm missing somethign?

It just needs to rhyme.

Well the flippant side of me suggests that * = asterisk, which would assume that the riddle was referring to the series of books.

Obelisk and...

Postby Aldus Marius on Sat Jan 22, 2005 9:07 am

...Ass-to-Risk, yes. I thought that when I first read the riddle. Unfortunately, being on the other side of the world from most of you sharpies, I also first read the riddle after several of you had already posted the answer!

But no, I won't ask for a handicap. >({|;-)
