elections

Postby Quintus Aurelius Orcus on Wed Nov 13, 2002 3:41 pm

Salvete Sodales
As i had the privilege to be the rogator, i will not pursue another term for this office but rather for Praetor.
I just wanted to let you know about it.

Salve Sokare,

After reading the regula I noticed you cannot stand for office while being Rogator. I'm sorry!

Salve Locate
But my term ends at december the 31st so i wouldn't be a rogator anymore. So basicly i could stand for office of Praetor after my term is over?

Salve Sokare,

Well, the problem is that new magistrates are elected in the period between the 8th and 14th of December, it is then the job of the rogatores to count all votes and announce the results on the 22nd of December. By the first of January, when your term as rogator will be over, everything involving elections has to be over.

Considering it wouldn't be very desirable to have the rogatores count votes in elections where they themselves are candidates, it has been decided that a rogator cannot present himself for office in the year he or she has to count votes.

Vale bene!

Salve Lupe
I understand the problem but what if my collegue counts all te votes and sent it to the consuls and i do it aswell. But i gather the votes in one e-mail and sent it to them as well so that everything is fair. I will not try to cheat and try to turn the tide in my favor. I'm not like that. But this is my word against the rest. What if i resign as rogator, wouldn' that solve the problem? Not that i'm eager to become Praetor but if it isn't possible i will shut up about it.

Salve Orce

Your proposal will not due. The reason rogatores are barred from running for office is precisely to avoid this problem of having them count votes in elections that they would have such a personal interest. That should have been made clear to you when you first became rogator. No one is questioning your honesty or fairness, but it would be a very bad precedent to set if this were allowed.

The only way you could run for a different office at this point is if you first resign as rogator. That however will cause all of us more problems as we try to find someone to fill that position so close to the election, and it certainly would not benefit your own campaign in seeking office to resign at a time when you are most needed. If you do not run for rogator in the up coming elections then you will be eligible to run in any subsequent elections.

Than its simple. I will not run for the office of Praetor nor for the office of Rogator. I will wait until next year.

elections?

Postby Q. C. Locatus Barbatus on Fri Apr 11, 2003 7:02 pm

Salve,

... euh, no. This message was dated 7 november 2002. These elections already have been held.

We have two kinds of elections here: for the 'general' magistrates, held at the end of the year (as can be seen in this message), and for the rectores of the collegia, normally held in summer. Although an additional election can be held when a rector is needed. We are discussing this in the senate. A bit patience please!

Salve Flora,

I'm sorry Locatus!

Don't worry about it, I'm sure everyone who hasn't been a member for some time (and even then) would think "well, there is an empty position, I'm willing to take it, so what's the problem ?". But there are some rules that have to be followed and since this is an internet group we sometimes have to wait quite some time before everyone involved has voiced his or her opinion.

On a brighter note : welcome here ! I'm currently studying Greek and Latin at the university of Ghent, hoping to become a teacher one day, so it's real nice for me to see that there are still people interested in ancient Rome (and Greece).
