Greek Myths Project

Postby Anonymous on Sat May 03, 2003 12:06 pm

Chairete sas,

I took the liberty of opening the topic here, as I presume it is officialy redirected. I believe the general idea is to post your favorite myth in order to get them all to gether? Is there already a coördinater to bundle them, do the final redaction? If not I would be glad tot do so.

Chairete sas,

I would like to say that I find it to be very important to use Greek names and their proper spelling in this context. Again this is one of my "stokpaardjes" (if anyone knows the prober translatio, plaese let me know. Drakon? this is rather stupid.) I actually detest Latinisms. Anyway, for example: not 'Hercules' or 'Heracles' but 'Herakles'. I hope everyone agrees and finds this to be evident.

Well since it is already posted here; i must say it is only natural to use Greek names and not Latin names. Normally the coördinator of such a project would be the rector but since he isn't present at the time i would be glad to be coördinator of this project. I presume that everyone in here knows some Greek myths and it would be nice to see some unfamiliar/ the not so wildly know myths and legends posted here.
For the rest i just want to say post your favorite myth or legend here. Anyone who want to join in.

Chairete,

No problem that you want to coordinate this project Alexander! Just make sure that you find contributors. We already have the daily life project running and not everyone has time and energy to be in two or three projects at once.

About the spelling. Yes, I also try to be consequent and write Greek names in a Greek transcription. But sometimes I do actually slip and make a mistake...

We could put this project in the freezer until the current project is finished?

Chairete sas,

I thnk this project should not have a time limit. If we start gathering some myths now, we could still add some even a year(s) from now. Therefore I suggest that whenever anybody had good information concerning a Greek Myth, (s)he mails it to me. then I will edit it into the unit of Greek Myths. When that is done everybody is free to reread and if we're all satisfied I'll ask the Aediles to put them online or to add them. What do you think? Esspecially the last fase, do you think it is meaningfull or burocratic?

Chairete sas,

If you want, I'll post a transcriptiontable for the alfabet(a). It was composed by one of my professors. Maybe it is even valuable to put on the Collegium essay list anyway.

Good point but i think everyone should be given the option to post the myths here and we can make a compilation of it later. So that we can read it here as on the site.

Chaire Orcus,

that is also an option. In my opinion it would though make things caotic. I could probably post the incomings in a separate discussiontopic. which would be a good solution for the burocraticly unnecessary fase I sugested above. I don't now. Other opinions?

Chaire Alexander,

I agree we should take our time.

Good idea about a transcription table, by the way. If you have one, please send it along. We lack quite some Greek language material on the site. I still have a declension table somewhere that needs to be uploaded...

Chaire µe Alexander!

It's best to send them to me as I'm the one who updates the site. If the attachments exceed 50KB (I suspect they will ;)) better use jeroen.meuleman@pandora.be then, if you want.

Thanks for your help and contributions!

I have a question: does anyone know where i can find the complete story of Euthymus? Online or offline? It was a hero who fought a daemon. This story is mentioned in Arcana Mundi but it is not told completly. Pausanias was the first (i guess) who wrote it down in his work "descriptions of Greece" I think that this story is a beautiful one because of the tegenstellingen (contradictions) in the story. It tells us that Oddyseus didn't care about one of his sailors being stoned to death by the villagers when he raped a woman. I think that this shows us a different side of Oddyseus than we are used to.
Or beter yet, this is more for the Belgian members here: does anyone of you know where i can get a copy of Pausanias' descriptions of Greece and Diodorus' Library?

Chaire Orcus,

If it was me, I'ld go to a seminar at the faculty of arts (RUG). You could by it in a specialised store, but I don't think it is your intention to buy them. You couls consult internet libraries too.

Spelling

Postby Anonymous on Mon Sep 22, 2003 5:43 pm

Khairete,

Greek spelling looks exotic and I think it very beautiful, but since all don't know Greek some guidance is necessary.

Chaire Korè,

The images didn't come through. I think you may have forgotten to insert the urls?

PS: What does your name mean? Is my guess correct that it is "Maiden of Demeter"?

Association of a name with a certain goddess

Postby Anonymous on Wed Sep 24, 2003 3:07 pm

Khaire Drakon,

My name has no much meaning. I call myself so just because I'm a Virgo and this constellation has some association with Persephone, who is the daughter of Demeter. :)
