RP Thread: OOC discussion

Postby Aldus Marius on Wed Nov 13, 2002 1:54 am

Salvete conlusores!

This topic is for Out-of-Character (OOC) communications relative to the ongoing role-playing thread. Anyone in, or interested in, the game may ask and answer questions here.

First up is a reprint of some game-related questions I had...
~~~~~~~
OOC: Before we get too much further into this, it would be useful to know a few things about our setting...
- Are we in Rome, a provincial capital or other town, or someplace else? (I have assumed Rome, but written little that actively depends on that assumption...and am perfectly willing to move the action elsewhere.)
- What era are we playing in? I know Scorpio's post specifically mentioned the last century of the Republic, but are we all agreed on this? (My protrayal of Marius and his Wanderings would fit better in the Flavian-Antonine period...)
Also, a few RP conventions...
- OOC = an 'Out-of-Character' post, when you are writing as yourself.
- IC = an 'In-Character' post, where you are writing as your RP persona.
It is very important to maintain the distinction between the two; this way no real-life Romans get insulted by the things their characters may say and do to each other. When returning to IC from OOC, mark that section BIC ('Back in Character') so we know to shift gears. Thank'ee... >({|:-)
- Moves: In general, 'moving' (writing actions/dialog for) a character other than your own is frowned upon. ('Background-noise' people like the other bar patrons or people in a crowd don't count--do with them what you will!) Different groups vary in strictness about this; so far, here, it has not been a problem...but I did want to let you know that the custom is out there, before it causes any hard feelings.
For myself, I intend to speak only for Marius in my scenes, and to write in Black when OOC *in RP only*. (All my other material, here and in the rest of the Forum, shall be in my customary Purple prose...unless I'm feeling especially military and switch to Green.) [wink]
In amicitia et fides,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.
RP
Postby Quintus Aurelius Orcus on Sat Nov 16, 2002 10:20 pm
Salvete
I have a question. I don't know that much of RP but is there a specific genre where this story is placed in orare letting this story evolve and see how it goes without setting any parameters for genres. Because the feeling i'm getting is that we are in the mystery/adventure genre which is fine by me.
Our Genre-ation
Postby Aldus Marius on Sun Nov 17, 2002 12:19 am
Ave, Orce! (and Avete to all others who might read this)
Genre-wise, nothing's carved in stone yet. I have always considered my own work to be what I call "Historical Fantasy"...that is, historical fiction with a few valves tweaked open, the better to admit more possibilities. My Dungeons & Dragons world is an underground Roman city built by the survivors of Vesuvius. It is definitely a fantastic realm, but at the same time unquestionably Roman...or as Roman as I can make it in that sort of environment. There are changes, adaptations; but I try to have them make sense.
In our game here, we're still at the intro stage: Characters meet; adventure seeds are sown. We don't seem to have a Gamemaster with a definite plot in mind. The closest thing to an adventure hook has been Mus' search for the missing heir. But look around; re-read some of the character intros and early posts, and you may find something you can 'riff off of' (to use a rock-guitarists' term). Your character has been lots of places, and so has mine; Piscinus has these Egyptian girls he's escorting, and that mysterious pendant which so interests Curio. Any character who's met Marius' old dogs would probably ask about the new ones... Tidbits like these can provide excuses for dialogue, or even for action. As this game is (so far) running nicely without a referee, each of us is free to contribute what we can.
In sum, this story is what we want it to be, or what we make it; so if you have an idea, have your character toss it into the pool and see if anybody bites! >({|:-)
Hopefully helpfully,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.
Salvete,
Oh, we definitely don't need a referee/gamesmaster/whatever - just let everyone do whatever they want!
Mari, I gave the pendant to Piscinus on the Britannia list, during a brief roleplay there. It does indeed have a great interest for me, and there are more than 1.
The way I see it, we're in Rome, but I'm not that concerned. It could be any Roman settlement. As for the time period - let whoever needs it most decide!
Holding Pattern...
Postby Aldus Marius on Sun Jan 19, 2003 12:14 am
Salvete iterum, conlusores!
Well, our roleplay seems to have slowed to a gentle trickle. Marius is asleep in the attic; Curio and maybe Scorpio are headed in his general direction; almost everyone else was last seen ducking out of the tavern. That's fine; what with the holidays keeping many of us busy, I expected some slowing for the winter, and it's way too soon to say that it ought to be picking up again already.
Dunno about anyone else, but I plan to keep writing introspective little mini-stories about Marius. Anyone is welcome to react to them here, even if you can't think of anything to add to the RP itself. And, of course, if anyone sees anything that looks like a jumping-on point, feel free!! Otherwise, if you want to resume interacting with him, just have your character knock on Marius' door the next morning. >({|:-)
Salvete,
Mi Mari, I'm currently not headed in your direction, but elsewhere, and will be back on Tuesday.
Um... Sokare, if you didn't like roleplaying, you just don't take part. No need to get yourself assassinated - it makes further roleplaying a little difficult. ;-)
I disagree. It can give the rpg a different twist to it. To be able to see how the other characters respond to it and how they deal with such a event.
True, we can roleplay successfully. I meant that it makes roleplaying difficult for you. :-D
How knows my character appears in a dream or so? There is no limit to what we can do with the characters since there are no real rules nor any genre attached to it. Maybe my character can come back from the dead to haunt those who have killed or guide those who need guidance.
Rule Number Three ('member?)
Postby Aldus Marius on Thu Jan 23, 2003 4:23 am
Avete...
Someone has moved my character. Not only moved him, but had him return to a taverna several days hence; talk to a stranger; witness a murder; and back out of a fight. Pretty significant developments in his life, don't you think...?
I will refrain from embarrassing the guilty party any more than I already have simply by mentioning this. I will ignore Marius the Wanderer's actions in that post; he's still at the Pap.Lup., though he'll probably go elsewhere come morning, unless someone visits him first at his lodgings. And, for the sake of clarity, let me say this:
...Don't do it again. ~~~ >({|:-(
the marius in my post is a friend of Sokarus and he is not your character. The marius i'm talking of is a long time friend of Sokarus who grew up with him and etc... That kind of Marius i was referring to. Not to your character. sorry if i forgot to mention that.
Marius Marius (HUMOR)
Postby Aldus Marius on Fri Jan 24, 2003 11:57 pm
Sokare,
Is good. Do with your Marius what you will...but a distinctive cognomen or a nickname might help the reader. Thanks for the clarification!
In case anyone was wondering, the steaming Roman smiley at the end of my warning was not about to go to Sokarus' house and make life short, sharp, and painful for him. Na, when somebody breaks an RP rule around me, they usually are met with something like this:
[The below recounts the sad fate of an obnoxious character in Might_of_Rome named Zantius, whose player kept sticking him in situations where he didn't belong...like tenderly-written love-scenes, which he routinely spoiled by turning them into household arrests. Petronius is my character in that game, being played on Yahoo; he's a former chariot-racer turned Legionary who just can't seem to stay out of trouble, and his commander has leant him his horse for the night...] >({|;-)
*~*~*~*~*~*\
[I wrote:] ...Of course, if you're *going* to impose Zantius on everyone, appropriately or not, don't be too surprised if you are greeted with something like this:
< - - - - - - - - [ DUMMY POST: READ AND DISREGARD ] - - - - - - - - >
[Petronius]
It was Petro's turn to exercise the Commander's stallion Maximus, and he could think of no better way to simulate battlefield chaos than by charging the animal down the highways and byways of the crowded City at breakneck speed. One particularly hairpin turn brought him, though he knew it not, to the House of Perpetua, where there seemed to be a little excitement already...
Petro could see inside the house just well enough to observe the table get smashed, the servants scattering...and one of them nancy-boy Praetorians swaggering around like a bigshot. His eyes went red at the same time as the horse's; he drew his spatha [cavalry longsword], charged Maximus into the atrium of the house (what the hey, he wasn't making the damage any worse!), and, yelling obscenities he'd picked up on the Rhine frontier, let the stallion have his head...
...Afterwards, in the Praetor Urbanus' office, he had to explain in triplicate why a Legionary smelling of latrine-water, astride a black hellhorse who seemed to breathe fire, had managed to reduce a whole squad of Praetorians to just so many grease-spots on Vibia Perpetua's mosaic tile floor. The head of the big ugly one was still dangling from Maximus' harness; the horse had single-hoofedly 'extracted' Petro from jail, had been protecting him ever since, and now no one could get near enough to either of them to remove the Praetorian's head.
"So," said the Praetor wearily (this wasn't in his jurisdiction; Petro would have to be remanded to his unit for trial and punishment under military law...): "You mind telling me what all that was about, young soldier...?"
"He insulted my tentmate's gal," Petronius replied; and, in a rare (for him) exercise of discretion, said not another word until he was back in camp scrubbing latrines again.
Sorry, sometimes I don't have enough time to post everywhere... and for the RP thread I need both inspiration and time... Perhaps later on the day ;).
ps: mi Mari, I've only recently noticed a small mistake in your signature... I think it should be "in amicitia et fide" :)
In fides...
Postby Aldus Marius on Wed Apr 02, 2003 2:05 am
Ave, clarissime Draco:
My signature is not a mistake. There are many concepts for which the Latin term looks plural, but isn't; and many of the Virtues are among them: Gravitas, Dignitas, Pietas, et Virtus; Amicitia, yes...but Fides. Spes, the Goddess/personification of Hope, depicted on the back of one of my coins (a medallion of Hadrian) as a young woman walking and slightly lifting her skirt [*wolf whistle*]...'Hope', indeed!!...but there's her name, right there on the coin inscription, SPES, and there's only one of her depicted. Well, what's a gentleman to do, mm? >({|:-)
On your RP dilemma, I completely understand. I'd much rather have you post once a fortnight when inspiration strikes, than daily serve up something not worthy of your previous efforts. Quality takes time, amice, and you may have all of the latter you need.
Salve mi Mari,
I should have explained it otherwise.
The female substantive "fides" is already singular and belongs to the fourth declension. "Amicitia" is a female substantive belonging to the first declension. When with the preposition "in", substantives take an ablative. In case of "amicitia", it simply remains "amicitia". But "fides" becomes "fide".
(I hope that explanation was correct... it's been a few years after all)
Vale bene!
Told ME...!
Postby Aldus Marius on Sat Apr 05, 2003 12:22 am
Salve iterum, mi Draco...
I shall certainly and deeply consider your advice (though, not being of the Grammarian persuasion [as noted in the Living Latin thread, which see], I did not understand half of it; I got enough out of the non-technical portion to give me pause for thought).
If, however, I decide to leave my .sig as-is--after all, it's been several years, and in three major Roman/Latinish organizations...!!--, I hope you will forgive me. Perhaps we can just chalk it up to my being a Provincial, or to my horrendous Hispanian accent...? >({|;-)
Marius' Whereabouts
Postby Aldus Marius on Thu May 29, 2003 7:12 pm
Marius, in the game, is on his way to various temples.
** Marius, in RL, is taking a crash course in Roman Sacred Spaces from the most worthy Piscinus. As ever with such an instructor, he is suffering a grand mal case of Information Overload. He will return to play once the lessons are assimilated...or he is assimilated by them. ** >({|;-)
