Salvete Romani,

Here we are with the quarters of the Ludi Romani.

This may well be the last time we get to see Bibax of factio Albata. His sponsor has not yet responded to the censores' query... But anyway, let that not spoil the fun!

QUARTER I: Maximus, Romulus, PD Robur, Morgareth, P Victorinus

A quick round-up for those who lost their short-term memory: we here have three former champions, and in all four factiones. Red, Gold, Purple and Green.

Maximus, Romulus and Morgareth are the quickest starters and are immediately locked in battle for the first spot. But soon, Robur and Victorinus are hot on their trail. In the meanwhile, it's Maximus and his "Centaurus" who have taken the lead, moving through the circus at amazing speeds... speeds never seen before in the circus! What did he do to his span and chariot? Victorinus comes up close and gives a subtle bump into the "Infernerator" of Morgareth; enough to send him spinning off track and finally breaking apart against the meta! In the confusion of the accident, Romulus has to show an incredible feat of charioteership, and narrowly evades crashing against the wall. This gives Robur the chance to temporarily become second, but to no avail: Romulus' speed and grace soon overtakes the Golden charioteer, and he reclaims his second position. Despite his small spectacle, Victorinus remains last.

1. Maximus
2. Romulus
3. PD Robur
4. P Victorinus
5. Morgareth kissed the meta

QUARTER II: Pericolosus, Juba Bane, Caesar, Callidus

Two Blues meet the numbers two and three of the rankings respectively. But Veneta is looking to score big time, lately, so it's not going to be an easy match, but Pericolosus and Callidus are hungry, too. Callidus desperately craves a victory, and Pericolosus has had bad luck in the previous races, which led to his loss of the first position in the rankings.

But the first round proves to be the decisive one. Caesar, full aware that his only chance at winning lies in the elimination of others, immediately begins to assault Callidus and his "Celetior". The Red chariot sways and swings. Callidus screams under the flaying of Caesar's whip. Eventually, he lets go of the reins and rolls out of his chariot. The crowd goes mad at this brutal display of power. The "Tempestas" speeds up to join his colleague Juba Bane and their opponent, Pericolosus, who are battling for the lead. Mercilessly, Pericolosus crushes the "Tempestas" against the meta as soon as he enters the bend! Juba Bane rushes ahead and takes the first spot. Caesar helplessly swings his whip... and hits Pericolosus in the face. Roaring with pain, he falls out of the "Flora Mortis" and rolls in the sands. Juba Bane and his "Aenglish Wildfire" are the only charioteer and span left in this quarter. After round five, the race is stopped because everyone is going home. Veneta celebrates a new victory.

1. Juba Bane
2. Pericolosus was eliminated by Caesar
3. Caesar was crushed against the spina by Pericolosus
4. Callidus was whipped up by Caesar

QUARTER III: Bibax, Hannibal, Rufus Pavor, Trophimus

It's time to see how our winner of last time, Rufus Pavor, will fare this time. Will it just be a one-off, or is he destined for greater victories? Who will tell. He's facing the ever-drunk Bibax and the two best Greens, Hannibal and Trophimus.

As they start, Rufus Pavor and Trophimus seem to start at equal speeds, but the public will never know how this exciting battle would have ended otherwise, as suddenly Bibax appears in between them out of nowhere, and crushes Trophimus' "Praedator" against the walls. This gives Rufus Pavor the slight advance he needs, and he exploits it to the fullest. Now, it's down between Hannibal and Bibax. The driver of the "Elephant" looks furious for the elimination of his team-mate, but has trouble passing the zig-zagging drunkard in his "Vigor Serpentis". Deeming his time has come, however, Hannibal suddenly begins to lash at Bibax. His whip curls around Bibax' decaying body, but Bibax himself, knowing all is lost, then turns around and lashes out as well, hitting Hannibal in the face and striking a wound across his bare chest. Bibax then loses equilibrium and falls face-down in the sand. Hannibal passes out due to the blood loss from his nose and mouth, and his span continues for two rounds without him. Rufus Pavor wins; he is the sole victor.

1. Rufus Pavor
2. Hannibal passed out
3. Bibax ate sand
4. Trophimus ate concrete

QUARTER IV: Damnator, Phaethoon, Myrtilos, Indutiomarus

The four classic charioteers need little introduction. This quarter is Albata's last hope of advancing beyond the quarters. Aurata is unsure that they'll make the semis as well.

As expected, and under huge cheers from the Whites, Damnator takes the lead and shows off what his span can do, leaving the others to their own devices. Second is Myrtilos, who saw a modest increase in results lately. His "Aquila" lightly hovers across the track. Phaethoon seems to desperately cling to a third position, but the Red is soon passed by Indutiomarus, who finally seems to have found a chance to show his true talent, as his "Gallia Victrix" seems near unstoppable. He is catching up with Myrtilos fast! Then, an unforseen accident happens in the front. Damnator, in his terrible speeds, slips up and comes to close to the walls! He can avoid a first collision, but the second time it's over. His "Fulmen Draconis" is reduced to splinters. Bye Albata! Meanwhile, the struggle between Myrtilos and Indutiomarus, never seen before, has been decided in favour of Indutiomarus.

1. Indutiomarus
2. Myrtilos
3. Phaethoon
4. Damnator crashed against the walls

----

Pass into the semis: Maximus (ru), Romulus (pu), Juba Bane (ve), Rufus Pavor (pu), Indutiomarus (au), Myrtilos (ve).

Added to the semis (the second and third fastest): PD Robur (au) and P Victorinus (pr).

SEMI I: Publius Decius Robur, Publius Victorinus, Juba Bane, Indutiomarus

Two Golden, one Green and one Blue. I don't think we ever saw such a semi before. The dominant factiones have to sit this one out! The circus looks very colourful.

Juba Bane takes a head start. His "Aenglish Wildfire" keeps the other three at bay successfully; and then to say that he used to be one of the worst charioteers! Times change. At any rate, Robur and Victorinus seem to engaged in a degradation battle, as Indutiomarus is slowly bridging the gap with Juba Bane. Both Victorinus and Robur are hungry for a victory. Robur is the better man, but Victorinus has more tricks up his sleeve and wham, there the "Quadriga Ignis" is pushed once, twice and then three times. As they anter the bend with the meta, Robur's destiny has become inevitable; his chariot bangs against the meta with such force that its charioteer rolls out of it and its span is frightened. Victorinus, under loud cheers of the Green supporters, tries to go on and catch up with the leading duo, but this has become a mission impossible.

Juba Bane and Indutiomarus duke it out in terms of technique and speed. Indutiomarus is stronger and more regular on the straight lines, but Juba Bane is better apt at rounding risky bends. So it is that first Gold leads, then Blue, then Gold, and then again Blue as they leave the last bend. Indutiomarus is at an advantage: a straight line! But the "Aenglish Wildfire" throws a last ditch effort, and crosses the finishing line first.

1. Juba Bane
2. Indutiomarus
3. Publius Victorinus
4. Publius Decius Robur was pushed against the meta

SEMI II: Romulus, Rufus Pavor, Myrtilos, Maximus

It seems a bit odd to have semis without Albata. But all the same, the other teams are happy to fill in for them, heh. Here we have the two strong Purple charioteers, one Blue and one Red. For Russata, it's a matter of life and death to reach the finals. Myrtilos knows he doesn't need to accomplish anything, but the Blues are of course hoping for a second finalist. For Purpurea, anything less than a final would be a disgrace.

Going, going, gone! Myrtilos and Rufus Pavor emerge as leaders from the first passage through that dangerous, murderous hairpin with the meta as its unforgiving guardian. Veneta and Purpurea are screaming at the top of their lungs. Maximus and Romulus are also fighting an intense battle. While Romulus applies his confident recipe of grace and concentration, Maximus moves at frantic speeds. Soon, he passes his contender. Meanwhile, Rufus Pavor and Myrtilos are entering another hairpin. Much to the surprise of everyone, the "Pugnus Martius" suddenly barges into the "Aquila". Myrtilos is taken by surprise. His span is already out of the bend, but his chariot slips and one of its wheels breaks against the meta! Myrtilos is out.

Now is down to Purple and Red. Russata fans look dangerous; their faces are painted with red body paint, and their war cries sound like those of barbarians. Honestly, if I was a Purpurea fan, I'd be a bit afraid. After all, here in the Societas Red and Purple are not on best terms! Romulus seems to have to let go of Maximus, who is just too fast for him. Now it's a struggle between Rufus Pavor and Maximus. Both spans thunder down the tracks with great ferocity, and they ride side by side, unrelenting in their determination. By Jove, it's a photo finish! But judges and personnel agree: the span of Rufus Pavor was a split second earlier than the "Centaurus". Part of the Russata crowd is pleased with Maximus reaching the finals, but another part goes on to riot in the City, claiming the judges have been corrupted with Purpurea money! Certainly, the circus is in turmoil...

1. Rufus Pavor
2. Maximus
3. Romulus
4. Myrtilos was slammed against the meta

FINALS: Juba Bane, Indutiomarus, Rufus Pavor, Maximus

Okay, so this is the big one! It's been a while since we saw finals with charioteers from four different factiones: Veneta, Aurata, Purpurea and Russata have all joined the fray. Most eyes are set on Rufus Pavor. Will he repeat his success and grasp a second consecutive victory? Or will Maximus, in fact, take his second victory and bring Russata closer to Albata? Or who knows one of the two outsiders might win...

Maximus and his "Centaurus" are away first and fastest. Like a red blur, he moves across the racing track, dust swirling up high in his wake so that his opponents have trouble seeing where he is. Nonetheless, each charioteer has become so accustomed to the tracks that their span blindly follows the commands of its master. Only Indutiomarus lags a bit behind, obviously confused by the blistering speeds. Although he tries hard, his momentary scraping the walls for a split second brought him at a disadvantage. As his "Gallia Victrix" falls behind, Rufus Pavor and Juba Bane are racing to catch up with Maximus.

Both charioteers are unrelenting, but Rufus Pavor gains the upper hand. Purpurea's fans in the circus are singing melodious songs of victories. Russata is producing heavy war cries, while Veneta seems a bit caught in the middle; after all, being in finals on a regular basis is still new to them. The "Pugnus Martius" has left behind the "Aenglish Wildfire" and is closing in on Maximus, who gives his opponent no quarter. The sound of the circus must just fly by his ears at such speeds, melting into harmony with the sound of his span racing across the sand. However, Rufus Pavor has thought about his strategy, so it seems. In the bend before facing the meta, he strikes quickly. The "Centaurus" is pushed, its wheel hitting the spina that leads up to the meta. The axis breaks and its span breaks loose. Rufus carefully races through the horses, who are soon brought back off track by a few slaves. The public is in outrage. Juba Bane is now heavily endorsed by Russata and Veneta, but to no avail: while he keeps a safe distance to Indutiomarus, Rufus Pavor keeps a safe distance from Juba Bane, and that's the order in which they pass the finish. The finals end in a great turmoil, as some of the more incensed Russata supporters threaten to burn down the circus.

Congratulations to Rufus Pavor and his sponsor, Lucius Moravius Tarquinius, for his second victory!

1. Rufus Pavor
2. Juba Bane
3. Indutiomarus
4. Maximus tipped over against the spina

I'm afraid, Mus, your statement is indefensible on the grounds that it's wrong. The next Ludi belong to Juba Bane, who's been improving with every race. 8)
