Postby Anonymous on Thu Sep 15, 2005 7:36 pm

Salvete Comitia!

Im not sure if I know what I am doing here, but I wanted to put up 2 banners for consideration for use by the SVR..
And if they are chosen,I Marcvs Popillivs Caldvs will forgo all rights et cetera to the designs and to the banners themselves, and they will become the legal property of SVR soley.

Salvete omnes,

I would prefer the second of those two options, looks more Roman to me. The first one reminds me too much of the Statue of Liberty and therefore of the USA.

But why creating something new? We already have a logo, just see above, the arc with the letters SVR. Why not turning that into a flag???

Salve Aelia,

Yes that is correct the 1st one would be for the American Region with the hand of Libertas(Statute of Liberty).

As for using the above logo.Good Idea..here,this one could be the International one, then have appropriate logos on the ones for each region or Nation in the Upper left quadrant.

Or one similar to this...

I think the last has great visual appeal, but it is difficult to see the details of the arch on the colored background. Maybe a white background with a red (or gold or both!) border?

Salve Calde,

Welcome to SVR!

I like your third design the best, and I don't have any problems with a specialised American design, it would be good if we were to have an American provincia. Nice work.

Yeah it is hard to see the details on the image above, but it would be better on a real banner or flag..

Hows this?

I still like the crimson one and the SVR Official Logo white banner with the Crimson trim better.

Emblematic

Postby Aldus Marius on Sun Sep 18, 2005 10:10 am

Salvete amici...

I can't speak for any other American sodalis, but just for myself...I don't really like the American one, or the concept of the US having a separate SVR flag to begin with. The whole Old Glory-Statue of Liberty-yellow ribbon thing has been grossly overdone and politicized since 9/11, and I reckon I'm going to need a cooling-off period before I can even look at them as anything but Teflon for our President. (Not that he's had much luck using them that way.)

My own all-time favorite logo is the gorgeous black-and-gold number that greets people to our Web site. It is high-contrast, handsome, and readily rendered into any object that can be silk-screened (flags, mugs, T-shirts...). I'd wear a tie-tac with that logo on it, and lay my SVR ballpoint on my SVR desk blotter. And while that color combination is very sharp-looking, it is rarely used--therefore distinct for us, therefore memorable.

Calde, have you seen this logo? Does it give you any ideas? >({|:-)

SVR-INTERNATIONAL BANNER

As for the different regions having seperate flags/banners,thats just an idea that would be for future. I imagine when the socitias is large enough to have seperate regional offices that is.

Encore!

Salve iterum, mi Calde...

SVR Venezuela, anyone...? (After all, I might go home...)

We come from all kinds of places. Brazil, I know, has a large Roman contingent, and I found several reenactor Legions in Argentina.

If you didn't want to do every individual country, you could make flag designs for regions; in South America those might be Brazil (on its own or with the Guianas and Guyana), Gran Colombia (Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador spun off from this superstate), Peru and Bolivia, and Chile/Argentina/Uruguay/Paraguay.

Ya think...? (Hey, I wouldn't ask if I didn't like your work.) >({|;-)

Salve Peregine!
I think regional would be better than every country also, but the people of those regions would have to decide what would be an appropriate symbol and colors for their region (like for example an European Banner could be the opposite colors of the EU flag or the EU flag alltogether with the SVR DESIGN as I have it on the flags for Canada and the US above),not me..I am merely posting suggestions for the banners themselves..
I think a Banner for North America would be great(Canada/USA/Mexico),one for Central America, one for South America, one for Europe,et cetera....

Salvete Calde et Mari,

Why should we have flags for every provincia of the SVR when we're just discussing at the concilium if we shall drop the provincia.

I favor just one flag of the SVR in general and like the one with the arch on white background bordered with gold and red or alternatively the arch together with the fasces symbol.

Salvete sis Aelia!
I was unaware of the topic discussion on droping the provincia.
So I made some suggestions on flags..while I was bored and thought it may be a good Idea to have one for the Societas and later if the SVR grew large enough to have provincial flags also. But I agree Aelia, that if the SVR did chose a banner,at the time it should be just one.

Provincia?

Postby Aldus Marius on Tue Sep 20, 2005 12:23 am

Salve iterum, thou Fount of Creativity!

You look like me a year ago, when I was trading SVR Wallpaper designs with Tiberius Draco. (We may revive that project yet; meanwhile, I have a ready-to-go template for some bookmarks.)

You want to be careful with 'Salve'. One transliteration and you're greeting people as 'Slave'. Even the redoubtable Marius, who has been one hell of a workhorse certainly...but never a slave. >({|;-)

On Provincia (the real reason I'm writing), in Concilium I've expressed the view that they are essentially something for us to grow into. We have only one at present, Provincia Belgica; its existence helps the Belgian contingent and doesn't hurt anyone else, so I'm personally for leaving Provinciae open as an option when we achieve critical mass in a given area. I'm not unduly worried about how long that might take.

In short, we haven't actually decided to get rid of the Provinciae, so I'm still rolling along as if we have them. If something breaks, you'll know!

(Culturally, Mexico is really a better fit with Central America...but this is all hypothetical anyway, isn't it? Nothing wrong with a good thought-experiment.)

In fide,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.
