Salvete, Romani!

Fasti for Sunday, 13 April:

Idibus Aprilibus
[NP]
LUDI CEREALES; FERIAE IOVI
Notes: Every Ides is sacred to Iuppiter. Idibus alba iovi grandior agna cadit. -Ovidius

Dunno if I've mentioned it on this page; but M Horatius Piscinus, our Pontifex Maximus and current Consul Novae Romae, created a Roman Calendar for the SVR Web site. Each day has the basic Fasti information, plus descriptions of whatever celebrations and/or historical events took place on that day, and often a pearl of wisdom from our ancient predecessors. Yes, this is where I get all the purple quotes. Here is today's:

* Ludi Cereri: Temples dedicated to Jupiter Victor (295 BCE) and Jupiter Libertas (246 BCE).
"Jupiter, if it is greatly pleasing to You, that we, rather than Mezentium, should give offerings to You, accordingly may You make us victorious." (Cato, Origines fr. I.12).

Counting down to Austin...!

Salvete, Amici Omnes -

The Roman Calendar for Saturday April 19, 2008:

Ante diem XIII Kalendas Maias
[NP]
LUDI CEREALES, CEREALIA

CEREALIA is celebrated in honour of the goddess Ceres, whose wanderings in search of her lost daughter Proserpine were represented at Rome by women clothed in white who would run about with lighted torches (Ov. Fast. IV.494). Games were celebrated in the Circus Maximus (Tacit. Ann. XV.53) with the racing of horses (SVR Calendar); the spectators appeared in white (Ov. Fast. IV.620).

There was a sacrifice of a pregnant sow to Ceres. In the fields, foxes were released with their tails aflame. At the Aventine temple a lectisternium was held for Ceres and Tellus, Liber and Libera, Consus and Ops -- this was a banquet for the gods, whose images were laid reclining on couches, with food laid out before them (lectum sternere, "to spread a couch"). (SVR Calendar; Dict. Greek and Roman Antiquities, 1875).

[N] = Nefastus (comitia: no; courts: no).

"Come to us, Liber, with clusters of grapes dangling from your horns, and you, too, Ceres, with a wreath of newly ripened wheat upon your temples, come! Gods of our fathers, we purify our farmers and our fruitful fields; we ask that you drive away harm from our borders. Let not the now sprouting plants succumb before harvest, let not the timid lambs be outrun by swift wolves." (Tibillus II.1.3-4; 17-20, ab Calendario SVR notum.)

* The traditional date for the founding of Rome, April 21, 753 BC, was initiated by Varro. The correctness of Varro's calculation has not been proved scientifically but is still used worldwide.

Fastus - comitia: no; courts: yes

VINALIA PRIORA (Vinalia Urbana)

There are two "Vinalia" festivals celebrated each year by the Romans: the Vinalia Urbana or priora; and then the Vinalia rustica or altera. The vinalia urbana are celebrated on the 23rd of April (a.d. IX. Kalend. Mai.). The wine casks filled the preceding autumn were opened for the first time in April, and the wine tasted (Pliny H.N. XVIII.69 s3). But before men actually tasted the new wine, a libation was offered to Jupiter, which was called calpar.

ROBIGALIA

Notes: The Robigalia is a public festival to preserve the fields from mildew; it is said to have been instituted by Numa, and was celebrated a.d. vii. Kal. Mai. (April 25th) (Pliny, Historia Naturalis XVIII.29 s69; Varro, de Re Rustica I.1 p90, ed. Bip.; de Lingua Latina VI.16, ed. Müll.; Festus, s.v.). The sacrifices offered on this occasion consisted of the entrails of a dog and a sheep, accompanied with frankincense and wine: a prayer was presented by a flamen in the grove of the ancient deity, whom Ovid and Columella make a goddess (Ovid, Fasti IV.907-09;942; Colum. X.342).

Here's our entry:

* Sacrifice of a dog by the Flamen Quirinalis at the fifth mile on the Via Claudia. "Spare Ceres’ grain, O scabby Robigo, let the tips of new shoots sway gently above the earth, let growing crops be nourished …keep your scaly hands from the harvest." (Ovid, Fasti IV.911-21)
* Serapia: Temple of Serapis on the Quirinal dedicated in 217 CE.

This day is of personal significance to me. Seven years ago on this date I left Nova Roma, some weeks after most of my friends had done so on the Ides of March. I was awaiting the outcome of one last round of negotiations, which fell through. I left when it became clear that I could do nothing else. By then I was feeling a bit like a sacrificed dog myself.

In fide,
Aldus Marius Peregrinus.
