Translation Request

Postby Aldus Marius on Thu Feb 21, 2008 5:08 am

Heia, mi Valeri!

As long as you're being Inquisitionally Latinate, could you shoot me a PM with the translation for that paragraph I added to the Regula Index? (See Comitia-->Aediles thread for the boilerplate.)

Tibi gratias ago! >({|:-)

Rank

More hierarchies. Reminds me of that short lived NR-ite "Maximus Ultimus Superbus".

Caesar was simply Caesar. He made it a grate name and lasting title.
I find the post count to be impressive, even inspiring.

Salvete amici...!

I've mentioned my adoption program for Spammers who turn out not to be Spambots. And last week I nailed another head to the Rostra. So as long as I've been sharing all these screenshots with ya's, I reckon I'll show you what our pornographers and drug-vendors look like after they've been tagged:

My favorite NR gens name was the Gens Dementia.

But on the subject of names, how did the former propraetor of California get the cognomen Maximus, when NR would not let people pick those kind of names?

Salve, mi Lupini!

> ...how did the former propraetor of California get the cognomen Maximus, when NR would not let people pick those kind of names?

He came that way. Nova Roma was not at all picky about the names before I volunteered to be Sulla's nomenclator. I can't decide which was worse: Pulchra Dea or the dynamic duo of Dredd and Jasar! My provincial Propraetor's nomen was Hyeanius. Another fellow wanted to be known as...oh, I forget the exact nomen, but it meant something like 'sex-slave'. (Oh yeah--'Catamitus'.)

Others were malformed or misapplied: gens Nigeria, nomen Niger? Martianius? Some gentes had a higher percentage of howlers than others--mostly those whos patres were (A) not Latinate and (B) too proud to accept correction. And many of the womens' names sounded like they should belong to a convulsing maniac...I mean, 'Violentilla Saltatrix'? So a Quintus Fabius Maximus would not have even merited an eyeblink early on.

I did what I could to prevent that sort of thing while I was on watch. Didn't help much; after I left, I heard NR even got a hyphenated gens (since disentangled). Name standards are considerably higher over there nowadays; but they give a lot more leeway on the Latinisation of modern names than I am inclined to, so the occasional oddity still turns up.

Our own naming guidelines are on the site, linked to from both the FAQ and the application form. I wrote 'em. Most of the Don'ts are in response to things I saw in NR. Go figure.

Thanks for the information! I always did wonder a bit at that.

On the subject of names, I kind of miss Fimbria myself...not that there is anything wrong with Peregrinus. But it was your original name.

And as an aside....I always thought it the height of popousity to deliberately choose a historic leaders name...like QFM...as if there was some actual comparison! Isn't it more meaningful {and enjoyable} to choose your own combination for your own personal reasons? Marcus Lupinius Paulus suits me best of all, and I will not change it again. I know Draco with his love of Hellenic things will probably never drop his name.

Salve iterum, mi Lupini!

'Peregrinus', depending on one's frame of mind, can mean Wanderer; Pilgrim; Foreigner; Guest; Seeker; the favored bird for Falconry, named for its extensive migrations; and a few other things, all appropriate. (Peregrini even had their own Praetor to represent them in Rome.)

'Fimbria' means "the guy with the bangs".

No contest. >({|;-)

I hope I have not seriously violated the naming guidelines in choosing my forum name. "Ciceronianus est, non Christianus" as God said to St. Jerome in a dream. Interesting that God speaks Latin.

Salve, Ciceroniane!

The naming guidelines are for member-prospects entering the Societas. Your Forum handle can be anything you'd like, as long at it's not gobbledygook or translates as something embarrassing! It doesn't even have to be Roman; I was "Archive" in more places than I could count before I came here; but of course the people most likely to visit the Forum will usually want a Roman login name to go with.

If someone feels a strong affinity for a particular historical figure, I would almost expect him or her to honor that by taking some element of, or reference to, the Great One's name and incorporating it into their own. We're Romans; we've got that whole pietas thing going... God knows what He's talking about. One doesn't have to be Cicero to be a Ciceronian. You're fine. >({|:-)

Thank you for the reply.

Perhaps I should consider trying to join one of the Societas. I have been browsing through some of the essays and articles, and wish I had been around to participate in the Trial of Cicero--as a member of the defense team, of course.
