Archaeologists find western world's oldest map By Hilary Clarke in Rome (Filed: 18/11/2005) The oldest map of anywhere in the western world, dating from about 500 BC, has been unearthed in southern Italy. Known as the Soleto Map, the depiction of Apulia, the heel of Italy's "boot", is on ...

Salvete omnes,

As this poll has been put online only thursday, I will not announce the results of the vote today, as foreseen, but next thursday, so that sodales will have had a full week to vote.

Valete,

I don't want to be a pest here, but... How are we going to set up that cista again? There are no censores to send voter codes to the sodales, and as far as I know only one of the rogatores is in action. Same with the aediles. While I see the dangers of making its ratification a simple poll on the ...

Salvete omnes,

As announced, I propose we can vote on the new regulae during the following week. I hereby ask the aediles to set up a cista.

Btw, Prime, could you please correct the title of this topic (or if you can't change it anymore, could our aediles ?) ? It should be SeptimIUS Severus (it is a mistake often made, don't worry ).

Vale optime !

New Regulae

Salvete omnes, As you may recall, a few months ago, the Societas, agreeing on the fact that its original regulae were hindering it in its development and efficient working, appointed a group of decemviri rei publicae constituendae to draft a new 'constitution' for our organisation. Somewhat...

Re: Septimius Severus

Avete, As Roma had no Citizens south of the Sahara (save the occasional beast-catcher), it is more likely--though not certain--that Emperor Severus was of North African descent. These people resembled, but were not, Phoenicians or Arabs more than anything. OTOH, we *were* doing a brisk business...

Re: Septimus Severus

There's currently an argument on the BBC History message boards about whether Emporor Septimus Severus was black or not. Anyone got any thoughts, and does anyone know of any contemporary sources that may shed some light on this? Gratias ago Could you post a link to the board in question ? ...

Uti rogas. Mari, I am confident that the new system will not harm the Collegia. It only replaces the structure they're in. But, as before, their flourishing will solely depend on the efforts of the sodales. I hope you will get used to the new organisational structure if it is voted. And if ...

Salvete, I forgot to announce my absentia, so I thought I could perhaps give notice of my adsentia . I've spent the prolonged weekend in Lyon (FR), ancient Lugdunum. Among other (non-Roman) things, I saw there : The beautiful ancient mosaics in the Gallo-Roman Museum : http://www&#...

Then the only solution for 'moderating' members seems to ban them temporarily. It is not a very elegant solution, but then again, it is meant to keep members behaving véry 'inelegantly' out... Of course, we should be careful not to "shoot at a mosquito with a canon", as a Dutch proverb goes : a s...

To incorporate Piscinus' explanation of the penalty of moderation, I suggest that we include the following in the proposed Regulae: II. G. Moderated status means that a sodalis' access to posting to the SVR fora is limited. Anything he or she wishes to post must first be reviewed by one of the of...

Salvete Omnes, I, too will take this opportunity to announce my absentia from 01. Oct. until 17. Oct. because I'll spend my vacation in Turkey. Of course I'll visit Ephesos and also hope to see some more ancient sites on my way along the coast from Izmir to Antalya. We'll be expecting your tra...

Salve Calde,

I don't know about modern practice, but there is an excellent Religio Romana calendar on our website, drawn up by sodalis Horatius Piscinus.

You can find it at http://www.societasviaromana.org/Collegium_Religionis/index.php

I disagree. A rector (or curator) has to have a form of leadership and responsibility. I've always seen this lack of responsibility as one of the causes that some collegia were never really active. I'm not saying curatores should make it a one-man show if no one is really listening or caring, but I...
