Re: If you were a Roman gladiator, what name would you adopt ?

LOL! "Annia Minucia, no - I'm Spartacus!" That's kind of an interesting question, since it requires you to speculate on (or research) what the Roman mass audience responded best to, in terms of "product" or "celebrity" names.... Maybe Cleo has a range o...

Re: What have the Romans ever done for us?

< Eheu. Silentium tonat! >

I just saw a blurb on a book specifically called,

The Inheritance of Rome: Illuminating the Dark Ages, 400-1000.

Published by Viking Adult this last July 30, 2009. That should bear on this topic - wonder if it's in the library yet....

Re: What have the Romans ever done for us?

The Res Publica, the governing of the state by the people who constituted the state. (It wasn't perfect, but it became the basic notion of how politics could best work. And the attempts to realize it were much more widely attempted than any to put Plato's republic into practice.)

Re: Roman symbol

Perhaps, given that the Religio was so tightly intertwined with the Roman polity and people, just SPQR, or the Eagle, or Lupina Mater, emblems of the city and state. Or perhaps by the image of Roma Victrix, as on coins. And to the extent the Religio was originally nature- and numina-related, it...

Re: How HAVE We All Been Doing?

Salve, Marii - Yes, Marii - sorry about all the drama. But that's why I started this thread - to see where we are after the whole Poplicola-Formosus mess. I decided that the cloud had passed, that all that is over, that misfires and misfortune ( ) are not the whole story here. So I'm ...

Re: How HAVE We All Been Doing?

Salve, Annia Minucia - So how are things in Louisiana for you then? Did you just pick up and go, and start looking for work? Or did you have friends down there to stay with? Just curious; my days of "picking up and going" are pretty much behind me, at my age - it's my kids' turn now....

How HAVE We All Been Doing?

Salvete, Sodales Sociique - Pridie Idus Quintilibus adsumus. From the calendar, "... I pray to You, Apollo, inventor of music and of all the healing arts, come to my aid and this undertaking, bless it with Your laurel." (Ovid Remedia Amoris 75-76) The day is Comitialis: Comitia yes, C...

Re: Expats from Nova Roma

Salve denuo, Venator -

Nice to see your post. Things are extremely quiet over here at the SVR lately, as you could see.

Re: Roman Themed Games

I took 'vicus Allemannorum' and before I knew what had happened, lost it back to 'em. The Western rebels are trapped, however.

No, I know nobody needs to hear this, but yeah, a good game. >({|:-)

Re: If you could bring something back, what would it be?

I would also bring back Roman engineering. Roman roads are still functioning after 2500 years, while my state government can barely fill a pothole in a modern road. Hmmmm. Very good point. That would pre-suppose that structures would be intended to last MORE than 40 or 50 years - unlike the cu...

Re: Improving SVR's Visibility

Salvete - Annia's point could be one of my own, that the SVR is a Romanophile refuge, if nothing else. Ursus's practical points, useful for the Society to thrive a bit more, echo a project that I assigned myself for this coming year but (to my discomfiture) haven't started on, which was to try...

Re: New RP Discussion Thread

There's a challenge AND a plot stimulus - to go round, deal with Paulus's 'mobster' invasion, et sequentia, and arrive back at the colosseum for the Venationes, and that then complicated by Marius's 'factio viridis' and perhaps some sort of connection to the 'mob' - !

Re: New RP Thread!

[ OOC : Has everyone enjoyed their vacation from the RP? 8) Should we re-wind it to some point? Or take it forward from Iohannes and Formosus waking up in Marius's abode? For my part, I would still like to see our heroes team up. The reason I did that wake-up scene at Marius's was to allow...
